Use of Barcoding Technology to Track Radiopharmaceutical Doses Among Jubilant Radiopharma's Best Practices for Patient Safety

Providing the correct radiopharmaceutical within the appropriate dose range is key to providing patients with an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. In addition to following all regulatory guidelines required by the multiple agencies governing the practice of nuclear pharmacy, Jubilant Radiopharma's nuclear pharmacists follow many stringent policies and procedures during the process of preparing each patient dose. Furthermore, Jubilant Radiopharma continually reviews and updates internal policies and procedures as well as incorporates and implements best practices to help prevent misadministrations and, thus, further ensures patient safety. Misadministrations in nuclear medicine procedures carry additional concerns related to the delay of proper diagnosis and unnecessary radiation exposure.

To help minimize such occurrences, Jubilant Radiopharma uses barcoding technology that can safely track doses across all stages, from order to administration, and, when paired with a client’s EMR/eRX system, can ensure that the right patient receives the right radiopharmaceutical with the right dose at the right time. This includes using ec2 Software Solutions' BioRx system that implements an internal barcoding system to track each dose prepared for patient use from Mo99/Tc99m generator elution through placement in the appropriate delivery case. ec2 also provides DoseConnec2t, an extension of the barcoding system into the nuclear medicine department through their NMIS and BioDose dose management platforms. The combination of DoseConnec2t and the client's EMR/eRX system allows the nuclear medicine technologist to use the barcode system on the unit dose label to continue to track doses through receipt, injection and the return back to the pharmacy.

However, previously extending this technology to the medical providers EMR/eRX system has required additional capital outlay. Now, with DoseConnec2t this can be done at no extra cost to the provider, which helps accelerate adoption of this patient safety engineering control. We currently offer DoseConnec2t so that, when combined with a medical provider’s EMR/eRX system, providers can accurately track every dose from prescription order all the way through administration to the patient through barcodes contained on the packaging. This barcoding technology can be easily integrated with the facility’s EMR/eRX system using a product-specific set of barcode data that is provided to the medical provider’s internal IT department by the local Jubilant Radiopharma Pharmacy. These codes are then loaded into the provider’s system, where they are mapped to the correct radiopharmaceutical.

By using DoseConnec2t integrated with their own EMR/eRX system, nuclear pharmacies and medical providers can improve patient safety by reducing potential misadministrations.
DoseConnec2t is available to Jubilant Radiopharma customers at no additional cost. To learn more about Doseconnec2t technology, please contact your local director of sales or your local Jubilant Radiopharma, Pharmacy Team.

Coming Soon From ec2 Software Systems: Launching at SNMMI 2016, ec2 will introduce Injection Confirmation Scan (ICS), a NEW mobile application (iOS/Android) that integrates with NMIS and BioDose V.16. ICS allows you to confirm that the right dose is being administered to the right patient. No ePHI data is stored on the mobile device. This fully integrated solution will allow users to: verify patient doses prior to administration; improve patient safety; and help avoid misadministrations.
